Movement for the Actor II

In this class the students will be able to take what they have learned from Movement I and create a realistic character while performing a scene or monologue.  Through the use of music, games and observations the students will learn to choose appropriate physical characteristics and mannerisms.  It may be helpful to take Creating a Character along with this class, but it is not required.  In order to attend this class the student must have taken Movement for the Actor I or must interview with the instructor for approval.

Introduction to Stage Combat II

The next installment of combat classes, Stage Combat II, introduces the student to single –handed broadsword.  The course will begin with a brief review of safety practices, as well as, a highlight of hand-to-hand combat and knife combat.  The student will be exposed to all aspects of broadsword combat from proper terminology to “footwork” and everything in-between.  The course will culminate with the students creating their own fight and holding a demonstration at the final class.  Parents are invited to come and watch the final demonstration.  Admittance into this course requires the completion of Stage Combat I.

Acting II

The next level of acting training.  This course further develops and strengthens the actor’s fundamental skills, such as creativity, teamwork, and concentration while implementing techniques of scene and character analysis.   Through use of advanced exercises the students will ascertain a mastery over these areas of skill.  Furthermore, the students will be assigned age appropriate scenes in which they will be able to apply these principles while interacting with their fellow actors.  Entry to this course requires the completion of Acting 1.  Students with practical experience who have not completed Acting 1 may be admitted into this course pending an interview with the instructor.


Voice for the Actor

(ages 8-12) 8 sessions

The voice is just one of the instruments the actor has at his/her disposal.  This specialized course is designed specifically to target the student’s voice and to provide the students with the technical skill to breathe life into a playwright’s words.  Through exercise and exploration the student will delve into all aspects of voice, such as proper breathing techniques, projection, volume, rate, pitch and enunciation to name a few.  In addition to learning the principles, students will learn a practical method in notating these principles within a script.  The course will culminate with the students preparing a two-minute monologue of their own choosing in which the aforementioned areas of voice will be applied.  This course is beneficial to both the experienced and inexperienced student.  Please note that this is NOT a singing class.


Creating a Character

(ages 13 – 17) 8 sessions

In his class the students will learn to break down a character.  Through the use of monologues and scenes the students will learn to understand a character’s background and behaviors and will create a realistic portrayal of that character.  This class is intended for students with some previous acting experience.  We recommend taking this class along with Movement for the Actor II, but it is not required.  Younger students may attend pending an interview with the instructor.


Introduction to Musical Theater

(ages 8-17) 8 sessions

April 9 – June 4 (no class April 23)

This is a course introducing the basics of musical theater, a form of entertainment based on dance, music, and acting.  We will treat each of these areas.  Stage “lingo” and audition requirements will also be covered.  Pieces of both modern and traditional musicals will be presented for discussion and debate.  Through lecture and application, each student will become acquainted with the world of musical theater.

Intro to Dance

(ages 8-17) 8 sessions

An overall introduction to theater style dancing: tap, jazz/hip-hop, modern, and ballet.  The eight-week session consists of an intro to a specific style and stretch in the first hour, and a short routine in the second hour.  Selections from famous and favorite musical theatre productions may be used for viewing beforehand.

Introduction to Music Theory

A crucial and usually forgotten aspect of vocal performance is the knowledge of written music.  This course, although discussion based, is mainly an academic aide.  The eight week session will introduce the student to notation, rhythm, key signatures/major scales, intervals and depending on the level of understanding, four-part voice leading.

Parents and friends are NOT permitted to watch or participate in classes unless noted.

Registration is on a first come, first served basis and enrollment is strictly limited for each class.

Class Instructors are subject to change.

Classes can be cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

All classes are atBrundage Park Playhouse or BPP Bungalows.

Playhouse is located on Carrell Road in Randolph.

Brundage Park Playhouse is a division of the Randolph Township Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services.

THE STAFF…

Christopher Young received an A.F.A. in Theater from the County College of Morris and a B.A. in Theater with a concentration in Acting from Centenary College.  Chris was seen in CCM’s productions of Alice ’s Adventures Underground, The Phoenician Women, Othello and Medea.  Chris also completed an internship with 12 Miles West Theater Co. and CCM, where he was seen in the NJ premiere of Arthur Miller’s The Ride Down Mt. Morgan.  At Centenary, he was seen in Pippin, The Rimers of Eldritch, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Woyzeck.  Chris was also seen in the Centenary Stage Co. professional production of Quartermaine’s Terms.  He was also featured in David Miguel Estrada’s My Burger with Ted in the Strawberry One-Act festival at the Riant Theater in NYC.  Other credits include The Shadow Box at Dover Little Theater, Macbeth, Hamlet and most currently Frankenstein at Brundage Park Playhouse.  Chris also recently worked as a Director for the Summer Stages program at BPP.  Chris is a company member of the Vagabond Players, where he has performed in over 20 productions.  Chris’ fight choreography credits include Robin Hood (TVP),The Chronicles of Narnia (BPP), and Titus Andronicus (BPP).  Chris is also the company fight choreographer for the newly formed Shakespeare Initiative housed at Brundage Park Playhouse.

Debbie Campanali earned an A.F.A. in theater from the County College of Morris and graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Theater Studies from Monclair State University.  She was seen in the Shakespeare and Co. productions of Alice’s Adventures Underground, The Phoenician Women, Othello and Medea.  While completing an internship with CCM and 12 Miles West Theater Co she was seen in their professional main stage production of The Ride Down Mt. Morgan.  Debbie has also been seen in Hamlet, Dracula, Titus Andronicus and most recently Frankenstein, all at Brundage Park Playhouse.  She has also performed with the Vagabond Players.  Debbie was the Director for the Advanced Performers Workshop camp in 2007 and is currently the Educational Director/Community Outreach for the newly formed Shakespeare Initiative at Brundage Park Playhouse.

Janine Papio is a Musical Theatre major at the County College of Morris.  She is the President of the Musical Theatre Association, President of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Vice President of the Student Government Association and student-aide for Music Theory, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.  Her past credits include as choreographer,  Othello (CCM), Summer Stages (BPP), and Kids Cabaret (BPP),  as Stage Manager, Into the Woods (BPP), and as Make Up Designer, Seussical the Musical (CCM).  Janine has also performed in an independent film, Anagnorisis, and has 13 years experience in dance.

Recent performance credits include: Aida – Aida, Rizzo – Grease, Witch – Into the Woods, Lola – Damn Yankess, Helena – A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Rosa Bud – The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Babette – Beauty and the Beast.
